START YOUR OWN ONLINE APPAREL AND ACCESSORY SHOP WITH NOTHING

Owning an online accessory shop is one of my sources of income as a graphic designer. But you don’t necessarily have to be a graphic designer or need a graphic designer to start your own online shop. Every day, someone either asks me how I started my line or tells me they want to design their own custom tees but they don’t have the time, money, and it seems like a lot of work. So today, I’m going to help you start off small, even if you just want to do it as a hobby or sell clothes that you want to wear on your own. If you’re a blogger or brand, adding a little merch to your website can’t hurt either.

No Skills Needed

No Major Up Front Cost Needed

Just Time & Patience

Easily Start Your Own Apparel & Accessory Shop With Nothing

With my tiny apartment and kids, there’s no way I can fully keep stock of items inside my home or have the time to ship things. Joseph gets into everything and right now it would just be too overwhelming. So, I use a print on demand company to help me with printing and they do the shipping too, with my brands name on the packages.

Why you don’t really need a designer

If you just want to create basic items, the company allows you to create on their website using their text editor and clipart. Once you’ve designed your product, you can choose from various mockups and post them to your social media or upload them to your website as product pics.

Need A website to Post Your Products With

I suggest using Etsy, Shopify and Squarespace. they have integrations with these sites and a few others so that your customers order goes directly to them. They’ll debit your card, print the order and ship it for you. You don’t have to do anything but sit back and collect your cut. It’s also an option to process your orders manually as they roll in, too. Sounds easy right. Please note, it does take some time on your part to sync and connect your products together. If you’ve never had a website before and you’re on a budget, I’d recommend using Etsy. They already have a huge following of buyers and you wont have to pay a monthly hosting fee like you would for a website. Just know that Etsy will take out their own process fee per sale, so make sure to keep that in mind when you are putting a price on your products.

She Bold Styled Stock For Your Business
806440001.jpg

I've mentioned before that I'm a huge fan of styled stock photography. Not every one has the time or budget to take photos for their brand and styled stock images takes the hassle out of all of that. As a work from home mother who doesn't have babyitters on hand, styled stock has helped polish my business a lot. I had my website up in days thanks to great styled stock photographers.

Today, meet Jasmine Hunt of She Bold. She offers great feminine imagery and you can snatch up her pics at a rate of $5 per photo or just join her membership club. One major gap that Jasmine has filled, is styled stock for women of color. Years ago, I hated that I couldn't find pics with African American hands typing away on a computer in a lovely setting. I was so so annoyed. But now that problem no longer exists. Here's a few of my favorite images below and the link to her shop and blog.

Business Tip: Grow Your Audience With ConvertKit
convertkit.jpg

If you're a business owner and you haven't been using E-Campaigns to build your audience and reach your followers, you need to start now! Just focusing on social media like Instagram isn't going to cut it. Especially since they've made so many changes.

When clients of mine are just starting out, I've either recommended Mailchimp or Mailerlite to name a few. Why, because they are free, and it doesn't make since to pay for something if you're not sure if you'll use it or stay consistent. If you think you've mastered using your email campaign service, you may be ready to now invest in yourself and make the switch to Convertkit so that you can start growing even more.

ConvertKit is the top leading E-mail marketing tool for creatives and small businesses.

Prices starts off at $29 a month for 1000 subscribers and they have a free concierge migration to help you make the switch from Mailchimp, Mailerlite, and others.

ConvertKit has the best email automation tools, so that you can generate particular emails out on their own. This means less time of you sitting at your computer, trying to send them out yourself.

For instance, If someone subscribes to your blog or business on your site, you can have an email sent automatically to them with their name in it and everything (people like when you personally talk to them:-). That email can contain your latest post or the newest products in your shop. If they read a post or purchase a product, you can have an automated email action sent directly to them thanking them and providing them with a coupon for their next order or something free like an ebook.

Watch the ConvertKit video below!

Think You're ready for Converkit? Scroll to the bottom of their packages for their 14 day trial and see if it works for you.

Let me know if you've made the switch, if you like it better or if you're already using it. I'd love to know your thoughts. I'll do an update soon on how its helped my business growth too.

Do You Sell Pillows: Here's 6 Of The Best Pillow Mockup Resources For Your Brand
6bestpillowmockups.jpg

Occasionally I'm asked by other designers and shop owners on where I get my mockups. If you're one of those in need, here are some of my favorite pillow mockups to add to your files. When adding product images to your shop, you always want to make sure you have pics of your product on a white background only and other pics that show your product being put to use. White background images are perfect for catalogs or to offer to your retail vendors. The other images are perfect for your website and social media. For most of the mockups below, you'll need Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator to edit them. Click on the images for more info.

Hopefully these will help you give your product line a more polished and professional look.

You want to make sure to use pictures that are free for commercial use and that you don’t accidentally use a photo from google search that may possibly get you in trouble for copyright infringement.  Today, I’ve gathered up all the sites I use that you can use too and their images are free!
