"THIS WORLD IS FULL OF CREATIVE ENTREPRENEURS, BOSS LADIES, AND MOMPRENURS WHO'VE MADE THE DECISION TO DO WHAT THEY LOVE. I KNOW, BECAUSE I GET TO WORK WITH SOME OF THEM EVERYDAY. THIS SERIES OF MY DIARY IS ALL ABOUT SHEDDING A LIGHT ON THEM AND BRINGING SOME INSPIRATION TO GIRLBOSSES EVERYWHERE." - TL HAYDEN

How did you get into blogging?

My introduction to blogging actually came from one of my English professors. For class, we shared our thoughts on course reading material through weekly private blog posts. And each week I went IN, sharing candid opinions about Invisible Man, The Yellow Wallpaper, and anything else devoured in + out of class. As someone who has kept a diary since I was old enough to write, this new-found way of journaling my thoughts excited me. But as the class came to a close, I was sad that my blogging would come to an end also. I shared my disappointment with one of my friends who was blogging at the time. She encouraged me to continue blogging, but suggested I share my posts publicly. This would be the beginning of my beauty + lifestyle blogging. And I've been blogging ever since!

How do you stay creative?

I stay surrounded by creativity and things that make me feel my creative best. I read a lot about different subjects to keep my thoughts fresh. I listen to music all the time to nearly every activity I do. And I try to write something every day, even if it's just my thoughts/feelings. Because to keep it all the way real, writer's block is no joke and will play you close if you let it. So when I'm experiencing it, I'll draw something. Or I'll make lists (about any and everything-- I'm a chronic list maker lol). I'll get caught up on my favorite podcasts or TV shows and journal how I can apply the lessons I learn from them to my everyday life. I'll catch up with friends and have some fun. And did I already say music? You'd be surprised how creative you can be with Big KRIT, Rapsody, and Prince bumping through your speakers all the time.

Was there ever a time you wanted to quit?

Yes. I think we all experience this feeling. Like "is this mic on?" "Is anybody out here reading what I have to say? Am I providing value to people on a consistent basis on So She Writes by Miss Dre? Do people feel empowered when rocking In A Beautiful World t-shirts?" I have had this conversation with myself more times than I care to admit. But I've learned that I have to keep pushing forward. The thing is, you never know who is looking to you for inspiration. You never know how walking in your life's purpose is fueling someone else. So you must keep creating, keep writing, and keep showing up for yourself. And if you have children, you want to show them they can live the life of their dreams if they don't give up!

Do you work a 9-5 also or work from home and blog only? Explain how either or works for you.

I'm currently working from home and blogging only. And honestly, I'm loving it. It works well for me right now, because I am able to set my own work schedule and still be home with my 4-year old. I'm also more available to my pre-teens when they get home from school. However, working from home takes so much discipline! You also have to be ready to deal with distractions and become flexible to changing plans, conflicting schedules, and appointments. All in all, I'm thankful for the opportunity though. Working from home gives me the ability to create, create, and create some more!

What advice would you give another young woman wanting to start her own business?

I would tell her to go for it! Write down your ideas, and really flesh them out. Then research, research, research. Then connect and network with other like-minded ladies in your niche. And put yourself and your work out there! Don't be afraid to share your gifts and abilities with the world. There's enough room out here for all of us to go get it!

How do you stay organized to keep your business/blog flowing?

The key to my organization is maintaining my schedule and keeping clutter to a minimum. When I'm creating, I have a tendency to work all over the place. There are times when the living room, the kitchen, and the nightstand all carry the burden of my works in progress. But when it's time to put the pause on work and take care of household affairs, I'm frustrated. So now, I'm working to keep things in place. I need to be able to find them and finish them later. I've also started assigning certain work to certain days (Monday might be my photography day, Tuesday might be my copywriting day, and Wednesday might be my social media scheduling day, for example). That way, I can consistently get work done each day without getting distracted by another unrelated task.

Whats your favorite app to use for your business?

I would say Instagram. Beautiful photography and hashtags can really help a creative + business owner get their work out there and connect with like minds. And I am always amazed by how much we can network and collaborate by starting a conversation in the DMs.

Whats your favorite word, quote, or verse, for this year and why?

My favorite quote and verse go hand in hand. 2 Timothy 1:7 says "For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." And Audre Lorde says, “When I dare to be powerful – to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid.” Reading these words daily are reminders for me to go out there and do my best. Like, "do your thing girl, don't be scared!"
