She's the Business: Meet Joy Ubani
"THIS WORLD IS FULL OF CREATIVE ENTREPRENEURS, BOSS LADIES, AND MOMPRENURS WHO'VE MADE THE DECISION TO DO WHAT THEY LOVE. I KNOW, BECAUSE I GET TO WORK WITH SOME OF THEM EVERYDAY. THIS SERIES OF MY DIARY IS ALL ABOUT SHEDDING A LIGHT ON THEM AND BRINGING SOME INSPIRATION TO GIRLBOSSES EVERYWHERE." - TL HAYDEN
What all do you do?
I launched my brand and business, Beneath Your Beautiful (BYB) in 2013. It began as a platform for women to build their self-esteem, specifically through fashion. Since then, it's evolved into a social enterprise. I travel to London twice a year and produce confidence workshops, product launch events + pop up boutiques, and branding masterclasses for bloggers and fashion and beauty businesses. So I guess to answer your question of "what do you do", I'd say I'm a brand and marketing consultant and publicist as BYB has evolved into its own boutique agency for fashion, beauty, and media brands. Oh, I'm also a high school counselor!
How did you get into becoming your own boss?
Pray. Wait. Work hard. Wait. Praise. Repeat. Literally. But, the long answer is I got into PR and branding by accident. I hosted a fashion show in 2014 for BYB, then was approached on separate occasions by an event attendee, a guest speaker, and model and asked to work with them as a publicist and brand manager, respectively. 10 years ago I never would have ventured to say I'd eventually be my own boss, yet here I am. It's been a long journey where I am constantly learning. I've learned the art of sacrifice, hard work, and conquer fear, gracefully.
How do you stay creative?
Ah, this is a tough one! Some days, it is easier to be creative than others. Mostly, it's a series of trial and error. I learn what works and go for it. I create moodboards, strategize with my staff, and read a lot (especially during creative blocks). Funny enough, as a high school counselor, I also get inspired a bit by my students!
Was there ever a time you wanted to quit?
Definitely. It's tough to stay motivated especially when results aren't always seen right away. I'm the type of person who prefers instant gratification (working on this though!) So when I don't see positive results right away or when great ideas don't always flow, I tend to get discouraged. I'm grateful for my close friend and family who are always present to encourage me -- AND grateful for amazing clients who make staying positive well worth it!
What advice would you give another young woman wanting to start her own business?
Do it!!! Don't let fear stop you from trying. Don't let nay-sayers keep you from going after your dream. Don't be afraid of hard work and don't despise humble beginnings. It will be hard, but I promise that every once of energy you put into your vision will be returned in a fruitful way. Also, be weary of who you share your vision with -- identify those in your life you can trust and who will pray you to the finish line.
How do you stay organized to keep your business flowing?
Google Drive to collaborate on client projects. A journal to write down ideas and meeting notes. And a handy dandy smart phone to handle everything else (especially scheduling appointments, and working around international time zones).
Do you have any blog tips you can share?
Be consistent, relatable, and real. People are actually eager to get to know who you are. Don't be afraid to share your light with the world.
What's your favorite app to use for your business?
Planoly, Instagram, Spark Post and What's App.
What's your favorite word, quote, or verse, for this year and why?
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18: Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
This verse came to me a few weeks ago and it really put things in perspective for me. These three actions are our Father's simple instructions for us. I've found myself more aligned and at peace when I'm mindful of my joy, speaking with God, and practicing gratitude.
